Utica bank seeks to open Friend branch
First Bank of Utica is working to establish a new branch location in Friend.

The bank has filed an application to open the new branch with the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance.

Wehrs reflects on World War II service
His purple heart is Richard Wehrs' most important possession from World War II, awarded to him after he was wounded in action serving as an Army infantryman.

"You had to earn that, you had to give blood for that," he said.

Seward seventh-grader travels to Canada
When it comes to international trips, most 12-year-olds don't take them unless they're with their family.

Jennifer Liska is not most 12-year-olds. The seventh grader took part in People to People, a student ambassador program, June 23-July 4. She traveled to Canada with a group of middle school students from Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas.

Seward seniors end season in semis
They fought it out to the end, but Seward's Legion Seniors came up a little short on their way to the championship game of the Area 4 Class B Legion baseball tournament.

In a matchup for a chance to play in the championship game the seniors lost to Wahoo 10-7 July 26.

Malcolm seniors go deep into tournament
The Malcolm Legion Seniors have taken Malcolm baseball to a whole new level. In the district tournament at Wilber, the Seniors have advanced farther than Malcolm has ever gone.

In their opening district game against Weeping Water July 22, the Seniors got off to a slow start in the tournament with a 15-5 loss.

Utica/Beaver Crossing Legion Seniors pitcher Eric Naber delivers a pitch during the Badgers' 11-5 loss to Dwight/Valparaiso July 21 in opening round action of the Class B Area 4 tournament at Seward. UBC went on to be eliminated with a 7-5 loss to Columbus Lakeview July 22.
