Jays third in home invite
Keasha Zadina tees off on No. 1 at Seward Country Club Aug. 27. She placed ninth in the Seward Invitational, helping the Seward girls' golf team to a third-place finish.


Defending state champs handle Jays

A young, relatively inexperienced Seward High football team took the field for its first game of 2010 against the two-time defending state champion Aurora.

Although the Jays battled hard, the Huskies were too much, handing SHS its first loss of the season 48-13.

Milford corrals Mustangs in opener
The Milford defense kept Raymond Central out of the end zone, and the Eagle offense kept finding the end zone as Milford defeated Raymond Central 47-7 to open the 2010 football season.

Although Milford didn't score on its first possession, it was able to finish on its second when Kyle Herman ran the final four yards of the drive for the touchdown. The drive started with a 10-yard pass from Boone Anderson to Taylor Klein that loosened up the defense, Coach Marty Hingst said.

Centennial opens softball season 2-2
Centennial's softball team opened the season with a pair of wins and a pair of losses in its first week of play.

"Its tough to lose two one-run games," Centennial Head Coach Tony Conell said. "I'm excited about the year. We didn't finish how we wanted, but we're pretty young."

Malcolm comes up short against Yutan
Even though the Malcolm football team ran 82 offensive plays in its first game of the season against Yutan Aug. 27, the team couldn't execute a win, falling 27-22.

"We executed half of a game is basically the way I look at it," Head Coach Scott Amen said.

Amen said his team needs to be able to open up its offense a little more.

SHS softball second at home invitational
The Seward softball team suffered its first loss of the season Aug. 28, losing to Friend 6-5 in the championship game of the Seward Invitational.

The game was a match-up of the defending Class C state champion Bulldogs and the Class B state runner-up Bluejays, and each team had a big inning, Seward Coach John Moody said.

Bulldogs go 3-1 at Red Raider Classic
Concordia University finished play at the Red Raider Classic with two wins Aug. 28. The Bulldogs picked up a 3-1 win over MidAmerica Nazarene University to start the day. Scores of the match were 25-23, 26-24, 15-25 and 25-20.

The Bulldogs added a 3-0 win over Valley City State later in the day. Scores of that match were 29-27, 25-15 and 25-21. Concordia finished 3-1 in the tournament and improved to 3-2 overall on the season.
