They fought it out to the end, but Seward's Legion Seniors came up a little short on their way to the championship game of the Area 4 Class B Legion baseball tournament.
In a matchup for a chance to play in the championship game the seniors lost to Wahoo 10-7 July 26.
"Our kids never gave up and fought to the end," Seward Head Coach Brock Anderson said. "They did a good job fighting to the end."
He said it was a tough loss because the team didn't play as well as they could, giving up seven or eight unearned runs in the game.
"We had some errors at unopportune times," Anderson said.
Wahoo scored one in the first, one in the third, four in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Seward scored one in the second inning, two in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Mark Wilcox started on the mound and lasted four inning. Chase Wurdeman pitched the final three innings.
On offense, Wurdeman was 1-4 with a run scored.
Logan Mahalek was 2-2 with a double, was hit by a pitch twice, scored twice and had a steal.
Kyle Einspahr was 2-3 with a triple and two RBI, was hit by a pitch and scored twice.
Adam Hans was 1-3 with a single, an RBI and two runs scored.
Logan Henning went 3-4.
Eric Heidemann was 1-3 with a walk.
The seniors opened play July 22 against Schuyler and won 3-0.
"It was a well-pitched game for both pitchers," Anderson said.
Each team got only three hits in the game.
Anderson said Kyle Einspahr pitched all seven innings for Seward, striking out eight.
Schuyler's pitcher only gave up the three hits in the game and struck out 12 Seward hitters, he said.
"Our guys did a good job getting on base and then scratching out a couple runs," Anderson said.
Seward's first score came in the second inning when Mark Wilcox drew a walk, stole a base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Logan Mahalek.
The seniors added another run in the fourth inning when Chase Wurdeman drew a walk and then advanced to second, third and home on passed balls.
Seward scored its final run in the sixth inning. Wurdeman singled, stole second and then scored after a couple of hits moved him around.
"Chase Wurdeman was our sparkplug scoring twice," Anderson said.
Wurdeman, Mahalek and Einspahr each had a hit in the game.
With the win Seward advanced to a matchup with top-seeded York July 23 and won the slugfest 15-9.
Wilcox got the start on the mound and went three and a third innings, giving up three hits, four runs and two walks while striking out four.
"He did a good job but then they started to get some hits," Anderson said. "We decided to make the change din the fourth because they started hitting him.
Wurdeman came on in relief to pitch the final three and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs and six walks while striking out six.
Anderson said it was a tough night for pitchers because of the muggy weather that made it hard to get a good grip on the ball.
"That night was a slugfest," he said.
Seward got on the board first scoring four in the first inning, one in the second and one in the third before York put up two in the third to make it a 6-2 game.
York added another two in the fourth to make it 6-4, but Seward answered with six runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
York scored three in the sixth to make it 13-7.
Each team added two in the seventh.
"We jumped on them early and just kept after them," Anderson said.
He said every time York scored Seward tried to answer back.
Seward's hitter faired well in the game.
Wilcox was 3-4 and scored twice.
Wurdeman drew two walks and scored twice.
Mahalek was 3-5 with a triple and scored twice.
Einspahr was 1-4 with a double and an RBI, scored twice and drew a walk.
Adam Hans went 1-5 with an RBI.
Richie Graves was 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Garrett Allgayer was 4-5 with two RBI.
Connor Majerus scored a run after being hit by a pitch.
Eric Heidemann went 2-3, scoring twice while driving in three RBI.
The win advanced the seniors to a game against Dwight/Valparaiso June 25.
Seward lost 14-0.
"They just came out and wanted it more than we did," Anderson said.
Dwight/Valparaiso scored seven in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Einspahr started and pitched one and a third innings.
Majerus pitched the last three and two-thirds.
Graves went 2-2 in the game.
"Their pitcher did a good job changing speeds and our hitters just couldn't get caught up with him," Anderson said.
