The Malcolm Legion Seniors have taken Malcolm baseball to a whole new level. In the district tournament at Wilber, the Seniors have advanced farther than Malcolm has ever gone.
In their opening district game against Weeping Water July 22, the Seniors got off to a slow start in the tournament with a 15-5 loss.
Head Coach Scott Smalley said his team did what it needed to do at the beginning of the game but defensively fell apart.
The Seniors were up 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning.
They gave up seven runs in the third inning and another six in the fifth inning.
Smalley said those innings were the deciding factors in the game.
Smalley said Zach Smathers pitched well in the game but ran into problems with the hitters and the team didn't do well behind him defensively either.
"We beat ourselves," Smalley said.
The Seniors rebounded July 23 in a 5-4 win against Elmwood Murdock.
Smalley said it was a sloppy game all the way around but was pleased they got the win.
"There were a lot of errors on both sides of the ball," he said.
Overall, he said the team struggled offensively, couldn't come up with timely hits, and left too many guys on base.
The Seniors returned to dominate Wilber July 24 in a 10-7 win.
Smalley said it was a well-played game and they were able to get the bats going more.
Smalley said Caleb Schroeder did a good job of pitching and threw a lot of strikes.
Smathers led the team offensively with a solo home run in the second inning and a lead-off double in the fifth inning.
Austin Kester hit a double that brought in three runs. Smalley said it was the turning point of the game for Malcolm.
The Seniors continued to find success in a 9-4 win against Weeping Water July 25.
"The bats finally came around for us," Smalley said. "We had timely hits and didn't leave as many guys on base."
Smalley said he was pleased the boys stepped up to the challenge and rallied around each other.
Offensively, Schroeder went 2-4 with two singles and four RBIs.
"It was a well-played game all around," Smalley said.
The Seniors were scheduled to play Adams July 26.
If they won, there were scheduled to play David City in the championship game July 27.
They are guaranteed at least a third place spot.
Going in to the game against Adams, Smalley said they are taking it one game and one inning at a time.
"We're going to do what we can and let everything fall in place," he said.
