Cemetery needs care
To the Utica Cemetery Committee, I would like to know what is going on with the care of the cemetery in Utica. It looks like a dumping ground.

Arts Council plans new year
Indeed, the "Arts Are Alive" in our community of Seward, Nebraska, and the reasons for this vibrant arts programming in Seward is because of Concordia University, our wonderful public and private schools, our outstanding and very supportive service/civic groups and clubs and our dedicated, local Seward Arts Council. Many individuals contribute hundreds of hours, often behind the scenes, preparing and promoting our numerous Seward arts happenings and events and we thank them.

GFWC to help teachers
The GFWC Seward Woman's Club has assisted and promoted the annual Plum Creek Children's Literacy Festival at Concordia University for many years and three years ago created a special fund to assist young, new teachers that wanted to attend the Saturday teacher session but could not afford the registration fees.

Age shouldn't affect hiring
Recently, I applied for a food service position. When I got a rejection letter, imagine my disappointment. I have eight years experience in food service, yet I was not called to come in for an interview or was my references called. Then it dawned on me that I had to put down my date of birth.

Yocum was a great leader
I am writing this letter in support of Sheriff Joe Yocum for re-election.

I am a fourth-year nursing student in the Bachelorette program at BryanLGH College of Health Sciences in Lincoln. This summer, I was fortunate to spend a 90-hour internship with the Seward County Sheriff's Department for a forensic nursing class I took. The individuals at the Seward Sheriff's Office all welcomed me and treated me as part of their team from day one.

Dana alumna thanks CU
When I heard the news of Dana College closing, I was crushed and saddened. Both my husband and I are graduates of Dana. However, as hard as the closing was on us, I can't even imagine how hard it is for current students left scrambling for a new college. I don't know what it's like to attend a huge university; Dana was small, it was a community, a family, my four year "Home on the Hill." I'm sure Dana's misplaced students are searching for that same "feeling" in whatever school they choose.

Middle school project may be too expensive
Maybe it's time to play a little devil's advocate again, although I'm sure it will not change any minds. If my memory serves me correctly, all through this middle school debate it has been projected than an ideal site should be 20 acres to have enough room, but wow, 41 plus acres is what the school board has agreed to purchase.

Right school, right reasons
What kind of a community does Seward want to be? Hopefully the kind of community that supports youth and provides them with every opportunity to succeed and thrive! On Augu. 10, 2010, we have the chance to prove that we are that kind of community.

Time is right for new SMS
I would like to do a follow-up to Kenny Kloke's letter last week. Kenny is supporting the bond issue for a new middle school.
