Weather impacts CHS week on links

They got it in before the storms hit – barely. The Centennial golf team was at Crete April 26 for the Crete Invitational, and the tournament finished minutes before storms blew into town, Coach Cam Scholl said.

“We got 18 in, and that was the biggest win of the day,” he said. “Everyone got in safe.”

Alex Hirschfeld played one of his most consistent rounds of the season and finished with an 81, good for 13th place in a tough field, Scholl said.

Sam Ehlers shot an 84 but did not medal. Owen Naber and Jordan Wagner both shot 95s, their best rounds of the year, the coach said.

“Crete can be a difficult course, and it was less than ideal conditions,” he said.

The week started for Centennial at Superior April 22, and the Broncos battled the wind throughout the day.

“The ball would blow off the green,” Scholl said.

Hirschfeld finished just short of the medals, shooting a 38-48 86 for an eighth-place tie, but he ended up 11th in the count-back, Scholl said. Naber and Wagner also shot well.

“All three battled. They gave their best effort,” Scholl said. “I was pleased with how they battled the wind.”

The team will play at Sutton Thursday, May 2, for the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament.

“We hope to put together a couple scores to medal,” Scholl said.

He said Sutton, Heartland and Sandy Creek have solid teams.

The district tournament is Monday, May 15, at Quail Run in Columbus.
