Zabka recognized for 50 years of service

It was curiosity that led high school sophomore Greg Zabka to ask Fullerton’s funeral director about his job.
But it was a calling to serve others that drove his career as a funeral director.
On April 23, the Nebraska Funeral Directors Association recognized Zabka for 50 years of service to his profession.

TODAY - Pulled pork fundraiser in Milford

The May fundraiser at the Milford Senior Center will be a pulled pork sandwich dinner Wednesday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is a fundraising event, as the Kiwanis Club of Milford is partnering with the elementary school to raise funds for an ADA/handicap accessible playground swing.

TODAY - Women's Club meets

The GFWC Seward Woman’s Club Spring Luncheon Meeting will be Wednesday, May 8, at 12:30 p.m. at the Seward Memorial Library. The program will feature the student first-place winners in the GFWC NFWC State Literature Contest, along with reports from the recent State Convention that was held in Seward. For those not able to join for the lunch, the meeting/student presentations will be at 1:30 p.m.

TOMORROW - Fourth Committee to meet

The Seward Fourth of July Celebration Committee will conduct its next Seward Fourth of July Celebration Festival meeting Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. at the Nebraska National Guard Museum in Seward. The meeting is open to all interested in volunteering to assist with an aspect of the annual Seward Fourth of July Festival on July 4. TODAY - Seward County Gives event in Utica

Utica will host an ice cream social tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Attendees can make their own sundaes.

TOMORROW - Seward County Gives finale

Seward County Gives Week will end tomorrow, May 9, with Gives on the Green at Thornridge Golf Course in Milford. The event starts at 5:30 p.m.

CU tops Doane for GPAC baseball crown

In the 2024 GPAC Baseball Championship Game, the 19th-ranked Bulldogs got the best of rival and 13th-ranked Doane, 5-1, on May 7 at Plum Creek Park, which welcomed its largest crowd of the season. The occasion marked the third time in four years that the two sides have met up in the conference title game. Both teams have qualified for the NAIA national tournament, which starts Monday, May 13.
The NAIA Selection Show scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 9. That show can be viewed by accessing the NAIA YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/PlayNAIA) at that date and time. Opening round host locations were announced by the NAIA on May 1. The opening round is slated to play out May 13-16 with the NAIA World Series to follow in Lewiston, Idaho, May 24-31.

SHS will send the following to the state track meet Wednesday and Thursday, May 15 and 16: Grace Brees, 100- and 200-meter dashes; Coral Collin, 100-meter dash; Tessa Greisen, 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs; Kelsey Miller 100- and 300-meter hurdles; Hayden Minchow, 100- and 300-meter hurdles; 4x100-meter relay; 4x400-meter relay; Lovely Hibbert, shot put and discus; and Madison Green, shot put.

The Seward boys' track and field team finished the District B3 meet at Norris May 7 in the runner-up spot. The following qualified for the state meet May 15 and 16 in Omaha: Jackson Einspahr, 1,600-meter run; Tresten Hass, 110-meter hurdles; the 4x800-meter relay; Kolten Green, shot put and discus; Ed Knott, high jump and pole vault; Caden Brooks, long jump; and Kayson Salyer, triple jump.

Isaac Roth won the 300-meter hurdles at the District B3 track meet May 7 at Norris and finished second in the 110-meter hurdles to lead the Eagles. Also qualifying for the state meet in Omaha next week are Avery Carter, boys' 800-meter run; Karlee Kuklis, girls' discus; and Sarah Spahr, girls' high jump (district champion).
