Get ready to scream

Seward will have a pretty sweet business added to its downtown area around October as What’s the Scoop will be serving ice cream to hungry customers. Mollee Harman of Seward will be starting the business at 430 Seward St. Read more in the Sept. 25 Independent.

Aug. 10 marked the start of harvest season at Junto Wine this year, and Junto Wine business and tasting room manager John Siebert said it is set to be complete in mid-September. About 30 community members, including several Concordia University students, help harvest every Saturday. Read more about the harvest in the Sept. 25 Independent.

Film festival starts tomorrow

The annual Flatwater Film Festival will run Friday through Sunday, Sept. 27-29, at the Rivoli Theatre in Seward. A pre-festival mixer will be this afternoon at 5 p.m. at Red Path Gallery and Tasting Room. Film showings will start tomorrow, Sept. 27, at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at 8:25 a.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29, at 8:55 a.m. Short films will be shown on both screens throughout the day. TODAY - SCHS museum open

The Seward County Historical Society Museum is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 – 5 p.m. through October.

TODAY - Genealogical Society open

The Seward County Genealogical Society is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Fridays from 3 – 5 p.m. and the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or by appointment. A business meeting is the third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. The organization is located at 233 Jackson Ave., Seward. Phone (402) 400-5250.

TODAY - Line dancing

The Seward Memorial Library will host line dancing classes Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Jacki Mason will demonstrate new steps as well as dance to some old favorites. Line dancing continues through Nov. 14.

TODAY - TOPS meets

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets weekly on Thursdays at the Living Word Church, 1300 Hillcrest, south door. TOPS is a weight management support group. Weigh-in begins at 11:15 a.m. and the meetings are from noon to 12:30 p.m. The initial meeting is free.

TOMORROW - SHS celebrates homecoming

Seward High has celebrated homecoming all week with activities and themes each day. Tomorrow, Sept. 27, the week culminates with the parade, pep rally and football game. Students should wear blue and gold on Friday. The parade will start about 2:30 p.m. and go from the high school to the elementary school and back, with the pep rally to follow. Kickoff for the football game is 6:30 p.m. at Concordia.

The funeral service for John Yelden will be Thursday, Sept. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Friedens United Church of Christ in Seward. Committal will follow in the Seward Cemetery.
