Paint issue delays work on water tower

The first efforts to put a base coat on Seward’s new water tower hit a snag that will likely delay the completion of the tower and the demolition of the old tower.

Seward City Administrator Greg Butcher said paint drift from a sub-contractor’s work on the tower caused headaches and problems for the city and its general contractor, and the painting project and demolition of the old tower will slow the project down.

The general contractor will bear the cost of any damage claims, Butcher said.

He expects a new subcontractor will be able to complete the painting by spring, but that may move the painting to spring, when the demolition was originally planned.

The city’s new 500,000-gallon steel water tower is to get a protective “technical” coat of paint inside and out before local artist Seth Boggs’ red, white and blue design reflecting the community’s 4th of July spirit is completed on the exterior.
