Gene Lester Mayfield was born Dec. 20, 1946, to Raymond and Leone (Shrader) Mayfield in Omaha.

He attended Garland High School, graduating in 1965. Gene served in the United States Army from October 1966 to September 1968 during the Vietnam War. While serving his country, he received three purple hearts. On March 29, 1969, Gene was united in marriage to Carol Fryc in Raymond. He worked at Goodyear in Lincoln for 33 years. In his free time, he enjoyed watching sports, playing poker, cards and other games. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities. Gene passed away Sept. 1, 2024, at his home in Seward at the age of 77.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Mayfield of Seward; children, Tammy (Justin) Salyer, Micki (Eric) Forbes, Tonya Parra and Derry Mayfield, all of Seward; grandchildren, Jared Nunnenkamp, Daylon and Kayson Salyer, Zayden Forbes, Sydney, Lauryn, Zackary and Leyton Parra, and Skylar, Michael, Zachary and Samantha Mayfield; siblings, Charlene Noden of California and Gary (Sonjia) Mayfield of Lincoln; sisters-in-law, Edith Mayfield of California and Pat Sitler of Garland; many nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Leone Mayfield; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Fred and Marie Fryc; sister and brother-in-law, Valerie and Leonard Friesel; brother, Raymond Mayfield; brothers-in-law, John Noden, Herbert Sitler and David Fryc; sister-in-law, Karen Studebaker; and nephews, Rayme and Bradley Mayfield.

A private family funeral service was conducted with committal in the Seward Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested in care of the Mayfield family. Arrangements by Volzke Funeral Home.
