Morning crash Aug. 22 claims one life

On Thursday, Aug. 22, at approximately 8 a.m., the Seward County Sheriff’s Office responded to an SUV/tractor collision at the intersection of 238th Road and Old Mill Road.

Preliminary investigation on scene revealed the tractor was traveling eastbound on Old Mill Road and the SUV was traveling westbound on Old Mill Road. The tractor turned north at the intersection of Old Mill Road and 238th Road colliding with the SUV.

The operator of the tractor, Cidric L. Beckler, 65, Seward, was uninjured and immediately went to the aid of the SUV driver. The driver of the SUV, Jamie E. Calmus, 34, of Seward was transported to Seward Memorial Hospital and later transported to Bryan West Medical Center.

Calmus ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at Bryan Medical. The SUV was also occupied by three juvenile children who were treated and released at the scene with no injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident. Seatbelts and restraints were properly used in the SUV.

Garland Fire and Rescue, Seward Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, and Seward County Roads Department assisted on scene. The accident is being investigated by the Seward County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol.
