Jays 3-1 in week on field

The Seward softball team held off York 6-3 Aug. 27 and went 2-1 at its home tournament Aug. 31. Seward beat Centennial 12-3, lost to Elkhorn North 9-6 and topped Central City 5-2.

Seward built a 3-0 lead through three innings against York before the Dukes got on the board in the fourth. SHS added two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. York cut the lead with two runs in the seventh.

Lauren Frihauf and McKenna Sides had two hits each, and Jeffi Schaefer hit a home run. Sides got the win in the circle and struck out 12.

Thursday’s scheduled game against Crete was rained out.

Seward opened its home invitational with a win over Centennial. Both teams scored two in the first inning, but Seward put up eight in the second and ended the game after five innings via the run rule.

Ava Stutzman was 2-2 with a double and a triple and drive in three runs for the Jays. Danielle Pallet also doubled and drove in two. Ella Policky singled twice and scored two runs for SHS.

Bell Herring got the win in the circle, striking out three in five innings.

Seward played Elkhorn North in the semifinal and led 4-3 going into the bottom of the fourth. The Wolves put up six runs in the inning for a 9-4 lead.

SHS cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth but couldn’t get closer.

Emma Frihauf was 2-4 with a double, and Lauren Frihauf drove in two runs.

The team came back with a three-run win against Central City. Schaefer was 2-2 with a double and a triple and drove in two. Sides struck out five in six innings.

Up next for Seward (6-3) was Adams Central at home Sept. 3 and Norris at home Thursday, Sept. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
