Judging coming up for holiday decor

The Seward Rotary Club and the SHS Future Business Leaders of America are again sponsoring the annual July Fourth Outdoor Holiday Home Decorating Contest for Seward. The contest will judge both daytime and nighttime decorations. The judging will be Sunday, June 30, at 6 p.m. and the winners’ names and addresses will be placed in the Seward County Independent. Send nominations to Seward Rotary, c/o Clark Kolterman, at clark.kolterman@sewardschools.org or call (402) 641-8522 or call Sandy Wright at the Jones Bank to nominate a home at (402) 643-3602.

Looking to help on the Fourth?

In an effort to locate and encourage more volunteers, the Seward Fourth of July Celebration Committee has enlisted the help of the JUSTSERVE program for volunteer recruitment. Individuals interested in being volunteers can go through the JUSTSERVE website and sign up for one or more areas of service. Adventures in construction

On Tuesday, July 3, area children are invited to Seward Memorial Library from 9 a.m. to noon to learn about construction in the community and meet some of the workers from Constructors and the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Activities include exploring construction equipment, making handprints and writing in concrete and free snow cones.

The String Beans will perform at the Seward Memorial Library on Thursday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m. From rockin’ rhythms to folk-infused favorites, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Channel 10/11 meteorologists will be at the Milford Senior Center on Thursday, June 27, at 10 a.m. to share fun weather facts, historical information and what it’s like in the day in the life of a meteorologist.

TODAY - Band practice tonight

Rehearsals for the Seward Municipal Band’s 137th season are Thursdays from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Borland Center on the Concordia University campus throughout the summer.

TO JULY 29 - Peaches, pears available for order

The Utica Lions are offering peaches and pears for sale. Peaches will be sold at 20 pounds for $52 or 10 pounds for $28. Pears are available at 20 pounds for $40 or 10 pounds for $22. THROUGH JULY - Oregon Trail Escape Room

During June and July, embark on the adventure of a lifetime with your wagon train in our Oregon Trail Escape Room at the Seward Memorial Library. Participants must RSVP and sign up has begun. Time slots vary so call or come by the library to register. It is recommended that children 9 and under have an adult with them, but all ages are welcome.

Talent competition at Saline County Fair

The Crete Lions Club and Saline County Fair will be hosting an all talent competition on July 17 at Tuxedo Park in Crete. To register for the competition contact Janette Drohman at (402) 429-0642.

Seward juniors tie Lincoln Christian

The Seward Legion Post 33 ZKE Storage juniors and Lincoln Christian played seven full innings June 26 and couldn't determine a winner, ending the game in a 0-0 tie. Seward had four hits - singles by Kolton Green, Quin Berner, Bostyn Happ and Tyler Hammond.

Seward seniors rally falls short

The Seward Legion Post 33 ZKE Storage seniors scored two runs in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on second but couldn't score in a 3-2 loss to Lincoln Christian June 26. Kolton Loos hit a double for Seward, and Reggie Sukup drove in a run.

Malcolm juniors beat Neb City

The Malcolm Legion juniors defeated Nebraska City 17-7 June 26. Carson Frank doubled and drove in four, and Chase Smith doubled and drove in three for Malcolm. Each had two hits, as did Brixon Meyer and Gavin Little.

Malcolm seniors shut out Nebraska City

The Malcolm Legion seniors allowed no hits and no runs in an 11-0 win over Nebraska City June 26. Mason Wisnieski was 2-3 with a triple and a home run and drove in five runs for Malcolm. Carson Frank was 1-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

EWBANK, Braden

Visitation for Braden Ewbank will be today, June 27, from 1-8 p.m. at Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home in Seward. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service will be tomorrow, June 28, at 10 a.m. at Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home. Graveside service and interment will be at 10:45 a.m. at the Seward Cemetery.
