CHS grad royalty finalist at UNK

Eight finalists for University of Nebraska at Kearney homecoming royalty were announced Oct. 7 during a pep rally on campus. Among them was Lance Haberman of Utica. The king and queen (Caleb Wiseman of Plattsmouth and Courtney Cox of Alliance) were crowned last night and will be recognized during the homecoming parade scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Kearney and the home football game set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Cope Stadium.

Cross country
The Milford boys were the Southern Nebraska Conference team champions Oct. 10, while the girls finished third. Avery Carter was the boys' champion, winning with a time of 16:55.37. Ellison Piening led the MHS girls in seventh at 22:52.71. Grace Schernikau placed fifth for Centennial, finishing in 21:44.4, and Carter Fritz led the Bronco boys with a 10th-place finish in 18:24.76.

The Seward girls won the Central Conference meet Oct. 10, scoring 22 points. Tessa Greisen paced the Jays with second place in 20:23.25, and Jordyn Samuels was fourth. The SHS boys' team finished third behind Lexington and Aurora. Micah Royuk was the top finisher in ninth place and 17:56.54. Cody Jacobsen finished 15th.

Softball teams play for places at state

Seward and Milford play in district softball finals today. The Eagles are at Hastings St. Cecilia starting at 10 a.m., and the Jays are in Crete starting at noon. The best-of-three series will determine state qualifiers.

TODAY - Flu shots in Seward

Memorial Health Care Systems will host a flu shot clinic Friday, Oct. 11, from 1-2 p.m. at the Seward Senior Center. You can download the flu vaccine form at www.mhcs.us to bring with you. You should also bring your insurance card.

TOMORROW - Scrap tire cleanup

The Seward County scrap tire clean-up day will be Saturday, Oct. 12, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Seward County Road shop, 3427 Waverly Road. See more information about the event at the Seward County Road Department Facebook page.

TOMORROW - Ducks Unlimited banquet

Seward County Ducks Unlimited will host its annual banquet tomorrow, Oct. 12, at the Seward County Ag Pavilion. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and the auction to follow.

TOMORROW - Farmer's market open Saturday

The Seward Farmers Market will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Seward County Fairgrounds. Check out the fresh produce and other items available.

SUNDAY - Wicked Wine Run/Walk

Heartfelt will host the Wicked Win Run/Walk Sunday, Oct. 13, at Junto Winery. The 5K run/walk starts at 1:30 p.m., with the tasting stroll at 2:30 p.m. A food truck and music are also available.

SUNDAY - Potato bake in Utica

The Utica Senior Center will host a potato bake on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A baked potato with toppings, salads, desserts, coffee and tea will be available for a free-will donation. Proceeds go to support the new flooring at the center.

SUNDAY - Discuss "The Reading List"

Summer is over, and All Seward Reads Together is ending. Join us for a book discussion of this year’s novel, “The Reading List” by Sara Nisha Adams on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. at the Seward Memorial Library.

A gathering of family and friends of Kathleen Schlechte will be today, Oct. 11, from 5-7 p.m. at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward. The funeral service will be Saturday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church. Committal will follow at the Seward Cemetery.

A celebration of life for Robin Wambold will be Saturday, Oct. 12, from 3-6 p.m. at the Seward VFW Club.

WARNER, Gloria

Visitation for Gloria Warner will be Sunday, Oct. 13, from 2-7 p.m. at Lauber Funeral Home in Milford. Family will greet friends throughout that time. The funeral service will be Monday, Oct. 14, at 11 a.m. at Lauber Funeral Home in Milford. Interment will follow at Blue Mound Cemetery.
