Memory Lane 1934

The kittenball field was the scene of a wild time Sunday evening, when the Marysville Maulers and Hunters Sluggers crossed bats and straddled mules and tried to ride to victory. The scorekeeper laughed so much that no accurate score could be kept, so the crowd never knew which team won the game. Veterans submissions sought

The annual Salute to Veterans will be printed in early November. Make sure your veterans are included by contacting the SCI office at (402) 643-3676 or emailing the information to office@sewardindependent.com. Past years' submissions will not be automatically included. The deadline is Friday, Oct. 18.

Sunday honors Gold Star families

Sunday, Sept. 29, is Gold Star Mother/Family Day, honoring the families who lost loved ones during military service. The Gold Star is a symbol of a loved one lost in combat. The practice of displaying gold stars began during World War I.

CU homecoming is this weekend

Film festival starts today

The annual Flatwater Film Festival will run Friday through Sunday, Sept. 27-29, at the Rivoli Theatre in Seward. Film showings will start today, Sept. 27, at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at 8:25 a.m. and Sunday, Sept. 29, at 8:55 a.m. Short films will be shown on both screens throughout the day. EVENTS

TODAY - Songs and stories in Goehner

Seward County Aging Services will host "Songs and Stories" today, Sept. 27, at 11:30 a.m. at the Goehner Fire Hall. Lunch will be served for a suggested contribution, followed by entertainment by Steve Todd.

TODAY - Pickleball hangout

All 18- to 25-year-olds are welcome to come to Moffitt Park's pickleball courts tonight, Sept. 27, from 6:30-8 p.m. to play pickleball. Food, drinks and fun are planned.

TODAY - SHS celebrates homecoming

Seward High has celebrated homecoming all week with activities and themes each day. Today, Sept. 27, the week culminates with the parade, pep rally and football game. Students should wear blue and gold on Friday. The parade will start about 2:30 p.m. and go from the high school to the elementary school and back, with the pep rally to follow. Kickoff for the football game is 6:30 p.m. at Concordia.

TODAY - Just for Fun Friday

Programs for adults are planned at the Seward Memorial Library every Friday from 1:30 – 3 p.m. First Friday, Ten Point Pitch. Second Friday, Bingo. Third Friday, crafts. Fourth Friday, puzzles. Today is the fourth Friday of September.

TOMORROW - Farmer's market open Saturday

The Seward Farmers Market will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Seward County Fairgrounds. Check out the fresh produce and other items available.

SUNDAY - Women in the old west

Marci Broyhill and Teresa Orr of Humanities Nebraska “give voice to obscure women and their vital, unique roles during the Western Movement” during a program called "Aprons, Skirts, Hats and Flirts" Sunday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Seward Memorial Library.

SUNDAY - Spaghetti served

The Seward VFW Auxiliary will serve spaghetti Sunday, Sept. 29, from 5-7 p.m. for a fee. The pasta is served with salad and a breadstick, and dessert is available. The bar will be open, as well. Cribbage, pitch, spades and other card games are planned for those who come early.

SUNDAY - Cornhole set at St. Vincent

The annual Cornholy tournament will be Sunday, Sept. 29, from noon to 4 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Seward. Inflatables for the kids will be available, as well as food from La Carreta.

HOLLE, Curt

Visitation for Curt Holle will be Sunday, Sept. 29, from 1-8:30 p.m. at Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home in Seward. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be Monday, Sept. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the Seward United Methodist Church. Graveside service and inurnment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Seward.
