For 125 years, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica has served the area. It will celebrate its 125th anniversary Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 and 15, with a family festival from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday and services and dinner Sunday. Read more about the church history in the Sept. 11 Independent.

Festival announces cancellation

The Plum Creek Literacy Festival announced yesterday that the 2024 festival, scheduled for Oct. 3-5, has been cancelled. A statement on its website and social media said: Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2024 Plum Creek Literacy Festival. We deeply appreciate the enthusiasm of our community, supporters, authors, educators and volunteers who have contributed to the continued success of the festival. Its social media post said related events like the Pre-Sale Book Sale and Art Gallery talk are also cancelled.

ALL MONTH - Suicide Awareness Month

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Post 4755 in Seward, is asking the public to wear a blue teardrop pin or sticker during September to bring awareness to veterans and military suicide. The auxiliary describes the teardrop as a “symbol that we can use to open a conversation to give this issue the attention so desperately needed.”

The Seward County Historical Society Museum is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 – 5 p.m. through October.

TODAY - Genealogical Society open

The Seward County Genealogical Society is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Fridays from 3 – 5 p.m. and the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or by appointment. A business meeting is the third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. The organization is located at 233 Jackson Ave., Seward. Phone (402) 400-5250.

The Seward County Nebraska Republicans invite any registered Republicans to attend monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. (subject to change). Meeting locations may vary. Make plans to meet at The Gathering Table (Milford Mennonite Fellowship Hall at 920 F St). The table is set on the second Thursday of each month for this complementary meal. Come anytime between 5:30 and 7 p.m.

TOMORROW - Constitution topic of speaker

Honoring the 10th anniversary of the Nebraska National Guard Museum, the Nebraska National Guard Historical Society will present “Our U.S. Constitution,” featuring Constitution Educator Sheila Collins, on Friday, Sept. 13. One-hour programs are at 10:05 a.m. and 1:35 p.m. The programs are free and open to the public.

SUNDAY - Denim and Diamonds

Tickets are now available for the “Denim and Diamonds” Gala on Sunday, Sept. 15, beginning at 4 p.m. The event at the Seward County Fairgrounds’ Harvest Hall benefits the Seward United Methodist Church’s south addition project which improved accessibility to the church’s sanctuary, restrooms and offices, as well as adding a new entrance and opening space for an additional classroom in the Bright Beginnings Child Development Center. The B Street Band will provide entertainment at the event, and both silent and live auctions are featured. Tickets are available individually or as a table of eight at: https://sewardumc.org/gala.html.

MONDAY - Kennel Club schedules classes

The Seward County Kennel Club will host dog obedience classes beginning Monday, Sept. 16, at the 4-H Center on the Seward County Fairgrounds. Class sizes are limited, and a fee will be charged. Pre-registration should be done at www.sewardcountykennelclub.com.
