Local mother living renewed life after daughter's kidney donation

This winter will mark one year since Seward's Traci Prochaska donated her kidney to her mom, Julie Prochaska. Read the Seward County Independent on Wednesday, Sept. 11, to learn about Julie's health journey, her daughters decision to give the gift of life and the impact the donation has made.

After a decade in Seward, Sam Sommerer has moved down the road. Not far, just to Utica, where the former St. John Lutheran School teacher is now the principal at St. Paul Lutheran School. Read more in the Sept. 4 SCI.

Vance reports on drug interdiction program

The Seward County drug interdiction task force is apprehending people with quantities of drugs not seen before, but seizing less cash than it did in previous years. Seward County Sheriff Mike Vance spoke to the Seward County Independent last week after he had submitted an annual federal financial report on the task force affiliated with Homeland Security to the county commissioners on Aug. 27.  Find out more in the Sept. 4 Independent.

Business officially breaks ground

Bulldogs win GPAC opener on road

In a battle between two teams that began the night with identical 7-1 records, the third-ranked Concordia University volleyball team absorbed a push from the home team and came away victorious. Efficient nights from four main Bulldog attackers helped chalk up a 25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15, win over Mount Marty Sept. 4.

SHS hosts Charlie Thorell Invite

The Seward High cross country teams host the annual Charlie Thorell Invitational this morning at 10 a.m. Races will be run at Plum Creek Park.

TODAY - SML shows action thriller

The Seward Memorial Library will showing a 2024 action thriller on Thursday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. Feel free to bring snacks and a drink. Visit sewardlibrary.org for more information.

TODAY - Line dancing starts

The Seward Memorial Library will host line dancing classes Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. Jacki Mason will demonstrate new steps as well as dance to some old favorites. Line dancing will start Sept. 5 and continue through Nov. 14.

TOMORROW - Just for fun at the library

Programs for adults are planned at the Seward Memorial Library every Friday of the month from 1:30 – 3 p.m. starting Sept. 6. The First Friday of the month will feature Ten Point Pitch. This card game is enjoyed by many, but if you are unfamiliar with the game, help will be offered. Second Friday, Bingo. Third Friday, crafts. Fourth Friday, puzzles.

Visitation for Mildred Heyen will be Sept. 5 from 2-8 p.m. at Lauber Funeral Home in Milford. The funeral service will be Friday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at Lauber Funeral Home in Milford. The graveside service will follow at 11:45 a.m. at Blue Mound Cemetery.

Family and friends of Sandy Smetter will gather to celebrate her life Thursday, Sept. 5, from 5-7 p.m. at Olde Glory Theatre in Seward.

MAYFIELD, Gene

Visitation for Gene Mayfield will be Thursday, Sept. 5, from 3-8 p.m. at Volzke Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m., also at the funeral home. A private family service is planned.
