Bill Deremer, a lifelong resident of the Utica area, was honored with an Admiral of the Great Navy certificate by the State of Nebraska for his 55 years of service to the Utica Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. Read more about him in the Oct. 9 Independent.

Voter deadlines on horizon

In the past few weeks, the Seward County Clerk’s election staff has mailed out 575 ballots requested by voters seeking to vote earlier than Election Day, Nov. 5. Seward County Clerk and Election Commissioner Sherry Schweitzer said she expects more ballots will be mailed out as people continue to request the early voting option prior to the Oct. 25 deadline. Briggs makes state field

Blair Briggs of Seward earned a place in the Class B state golf field based on her play throughout the season. She joins teammate Bryn Christensen, who finished fifth in the district tournament. The Class B state meet is Oct. 14 and 15 in Gering.

CU athletes honored

A pair of upperclass standouts from the Concordia University volleyball team netted GPAC Player of the Week awards following the Bulldogs’ weekend road trip. As announced by the league office Oct. 8, senior Becca Gebhardt has been named the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Defender of the Week while junior Ashley Keck has been recognized as the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Attacker of the Week.
Just three meets into his collegiate career, freshman Vaughn Hendrickson has already been honored twice by the GPAC. On Oct. 9, the league office named Hendrickson the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week.

TODAY - Farmer's market open Wednesday

The Seward Farmers Market will be open Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the Seward County Fairgrounds. Oct. 30 is the final day for the market for 2024.

TODAY - Woman’s club to meet

The next GFWC Seward Woman’s Club meeting will include a presentation on Alzheimer’s by Maria Olivias of Asera Care. The community is welcome to attend. The club meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the Seward Memorial Library and will feature a fall season dessert and conversation before the program. TOMORROW - QPR training

QPR Suicide Prevention Training will be offered Thursday, Oct. 10, from 5-6:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Seward. Contact the office at (402) 643-3829 for more information. QPR stands for question, persuade, refer. The training is free, and registration is not required.

TOMORROW - Republicans to meet

Seward County Republicans will meet Thursday, Oct. 10, at The Rock. Social hour at 6 p.m. and U.S. Sen. Deb Fischer will speak at 7 p.m.

TOMORROW - Gathering Table

Make plans to meet at The Gathering Table (Milford Mennonite Fellowship Hall at 920 F St). The table is set on the second Thursday of each month for this complementary meal. Come anytime between 5:30 and 7 p.m.

The Seward County Historical Society Museum is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 – 5 p.m. through October.

TOMORROW - Genealogical Society open

The Seward County Genealogical Society is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Fridays from 3 – 5 p.m. and the first Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or by appointment. A gathering of family and friends of Roger Van Ooyen will be today, Oct. 9, from 6-9 p.m. at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward. A private family service is planned.

CROSS, Lucille

Visitation for Lucille Cross will be today, Oct. 9, from 1-8:30 p.m. at Zabka-Perdue Funeral Home in Seward. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. The funeral service will be Oct. 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the Beaver Crossing United Methodist Church. Graveside services and interment will follow at 3 p.m. at the Utica Cemetery.
